Dr Matthew (Matt) Fernando is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who has worked at the prestigious South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust since 2010 where he continues to work alongside his colleagues here at The Giaroli Centre.

Dr Fernando completed medical training at
St. George’s, University of London in 2006, having also obtained a BSc in Pharmacology with Basic Medical Sciences from King’s College, London in 2004.

He specialises in neurodevelopmental conditions, including ADHD, autism and intellectual disabilities, providing assessment and treatment of young people with these and associated mental health and behavioural conditions. He is the clinical lead for ADHD in his area, improving local pathways for diagnosis and management. Dr Fernando also has a particular interest in the neuropsychiatry of epilepsy, and works clinically with the charity Young Epilepsy.

Dr Fernando was appointed to his current NHS consultant post in a specialist neurodevelopmental service in 2017, having previously worked in a number of highly specialised services. These included the Service for Complex Autism and Associated Neurodevelopmental Disorders (SCAAND) based at the Michael Rutter Centre, as well as specialist services for young people with mood disorders and those with eating disorders.

He has worked closely in the NHS alongside a number of his colleagues here at The Dr Giaroli Centre, including Dr Lisa Burke, Dr Nicoletta Adamo and Dr Pretesh Shah.

As an experienced clinician, Dr Fernando is committed to improving the outcomes of young people with neurodevelopmental conditions and helping them to achieve their full potential. He is also keenly interested in training and education of the next generation of clinicians, and is a clinical supervisor for both psychiatrists in training and undergraduate medical students.


Dr Fernando’s General Medical Council (GMC) registration is 6141381 and he is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
