Dr Rehana Shakir MD MRCPsych PGCert

Consultant Child & Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist

Dr Rehana Shakir is a Consultant Psychiatrist who in conjunction with her work at The Giaroli Centre also leads the ADHD and Autism pathway for children and adolescents with special needs in an East London NHS trust. As a lead Psychiatrist in her NHS trust, she takes responsibility for diagnosis, management and treatment of neurodevelopmental conditions (such as ADHD and Autism) for young people with severely challenging behaviours. Dr Shakir is also is the Safeguarding Lead for children in her NHS work.

 

Dr. Shakir has a wide range of experience, first graduating from Tver State Medical Institute in Russia, before then working in Sri Lanka, then followed by over 20 years of experience in psychiatry in the NHS in the UK. She did her postgraduate training in the Oxford deanery, specialising in the psychiatry of intellectual disabilities. Later Dr Shakir developed a special interest in neurodevelopmental conditions (such as ADHD and Autism) across all ages, with further postgraduate qualifications in Autism. Dr Shakir collaborates in a multi-disciplinary setting to deliver either the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) or the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) or PEERS Certified Adolescent Videoconference Parent-Assisted Teleconference Assessment, for detailed diagnoses of Autism where required.

 

As a consultant, Dr Shakir has experience in a wide variety of settings, from managing a complex and challenging inpatient unit in Oxford, to currently being the lead psychiatrist for an outpatient service for neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and Autism. With years of exposure to working successfully with schools, families, social services and other multidisciplinary team members.

With her expertise, Dr. Shakir was involved in postgraduate teaching in the Oxford Deanery, lecturing on intellectual disabilities. Currently, she is a clinical trainer for junior doctors and is actively involved in medical student teaching at University College London (UCL). Dr. Shakir is a highly caring and empathetic practitioner of medicine who strongly believes in putting the patient at the centre of her care.
